Over-fishing
Fish and seafood are one of the main grains of human. To take the fish, people have to go fishing. However, it leads to an international problem because of overfishing. Overfishing means catching too much fish for the system to support leads to an overall degradation to the system. The fish get fewer and fewer until there are none to catch.
On top of the overcapacity many methods are unsustainable in their own way. These methods have a large impact on the basic functioning of our marine ecosystems. These fishing practices and gear cause tremendous destruction on non target species.
Many people in the world are attending overfishing problem. According to the SOFIA report, there are 52% of fish stocks are fully exploited, but 17% are overexploited, 7% are depleted and 1% is recovering from depletion. It shows that over 25% of all the world’s fish stocks are either overexploited or depleted. It means in the real world all this comes down to two serious problems that is losing species as well as entire ecosystems and we are risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons.
If we want to we can reverse most of the destruction. The government, for example, should conclude a monitoring system to make sure fisherman do not fish in closed areas and cheat as less as possible. The government should also conclude the safe catch limits that can control on by catch.
On the other hand, individuals can help to solve this global problem. We should read more articles that about the issues of overfishing. We should recommend others to read the articles too. Also, we should not eat endangered species. For example, shark fins and dolphins. We could also share this message in the internet, liked Weibo, to inform peoples to protect the ecosystems.
To conclude, overfishing is a serious global problem that many people attending on. So we should do to help. Not only by the government, but also by individuals. International cooperation is needed to protect the ocean. So let’s take action on stopping overfishing!
